A Spool of Blue Thread
On the day of the 7/7 bombings in London I was at a conference with the awesome novelist Nick Hornby. It was unsafe to leave the building so I had the joy of grilling him about his life, his writing and his reading loves.
One of the many gifts I received from Nick Hornby that day was an introduction to Anne Tyler whom he considers, ‘the best living novelist.’ That night I ordered Breathing Lessons and then read all her books, pacing myself so that I wouldn’t gulp them all down at once and have nothing to look forward to.
Anne Tyler is a magician. She writes about everyday life and everyday people in a way that feels so real you believe that you’re touching the world she’s spun. She is one of my greatest role models and her latest novel is charming, sharp and moving as ever. Her exploration of love, family, and the past is rightly being celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic. It gets my vote for the 2015 Man Booker Prize!
