…and if you pull it off, you will get recognition, male or female.”
Last year I read Jennifer Egan’s, A Visit From the Goon Squad, a wonderful inter-textual novel using everything from Power Point slides to magazine articles to weave together a narrative based on time and music and modern life. In an interview with the Mariella Frostrup, Egan was asked about the challenges of writing in a culture where ‘The Great American Novel’ is more often than not attributed to men – a recent article on Egan featured a picture of Jonathan Franzen as a comparative! She responded that writing things that are hard and brave and being open minded is they key to good writing and that therein lies the truly great novel, American or otherwise. A good piece of advice for a new novelist, like me.
