Just as lines of poetry inspire me, so to do lines from novels. These are the famous opening words from Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow. Some writers believe that once they have the first line of their story in place, the rest just follows. Why not borrow this opening and see where it takes you today? On another day, when you’re stuck, just take a novel off your bookshelf, turn to the opening page, look at the first line and use that to inspire you for a writing exercise. First lines are often rich with meaning and possibility.
So now write, 5 minutes, no stopping, no looking back, no editing or criticising – just scribble!
Happy writing! 💫
