People must find me strange, taking photographs of such things, but whenever I see a sign that raises one of the ‘W’ questions in me (Why? What? Where? When? Who?), I snap a picture knowing that it might serve later as a writing prompt or to inspire me for a scene I’m writing in a novel.
What more intriguing a command is there than ‘keep clear’ or ‘keep out’? We are, by nature, as rebellious as we are keen on making signs and laws. Which means that when we’re told we can’t go somewhere, that’s usually exactly where we want to go.
So today, as you sit down to do a bit of automatic writing inspired by this prompt, ask yourself why you – or anyone – should keep clear and where this sign is and what would happen if the instruction wasn’t obeyed. Or take it in a completely different direction: allow your mind to wander, imaginatively, to those places that are uniquely yours.
Just write, anything that comes to mind, five minutes non-stop (or longer, of course).
Happy writing! 💫
