Those of you who know me as a person or as a writer will also know that I love animals. I think they’re magical, that they have one foot – or rather paw – in some divine sphere and the other here on earth and that they bring that magic into our lives every day, from birdsong in the morning to a cat curled up beside you on the bed to a dog who walks with you for miles. I’ve written about my love of animals and writing about animals before – you can find it here.
This week, I came across a wonderful news article about two very special dogs, Belka and Strelka, who were on the Russian side of the space race. They were, thank goodness, treated humanely and survived their space exploration under good conditions. Interestingly, one of Streak’s puppies ended up living in the Whitehouse and had puppies of her own with one of the Whitehouse canniness – no doubt the closest the Russians and the Americans have ever got!
The idea of dogs going into space or travelling at all piqued my interest. Take this photograph of Strelka and Belka and the idea of space dogs in any direction that inspires. You could even write from the point of view of one of the dogs. Write for five minutes non-stop, anything that comes to mind, see where it takes you.
Happy writing! 💫
